The Orchard And Floating World Pictures Sign Distribution Deal For Acclaimed Documentary "The State Of Marriage"
"The State of Marriage is an indispensable addition to the filmed history of the marriage equality movement . . . and a suspenseful nail-biter right up to the feel good ending." - The Hollywood Reporter
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Orchard has acquired all worldwide media rights to the documentary, The State of Marriage, from Floating World Pictures. The film will be available on iTunes and On Demand beginning May 31, 2016.
The film chronicles the epic, two-decade struggle in Vermont that built the foundation for the entire marriage equality movement. Three extraordinary lawyers featured in the film - Susan Murray, Beth Robinson and Mary Bonauto - forged the legal, social, and political path in the 1990's that ultimately led to the U.S. Supreme Court establishing the freedom to marry for same-sex couples nationwide.
Author, radio host, and Huffington Post editor-at-large Michelangelo Signorile said, "This important film is engaging and colorful, and it's tender and warm, showing the heroes who fought against an enormous backlash and paved the way for us all." The film features civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, Gov. Howard Dean, playwright Terrence McNally, Freedom to Marry founder Even Wolfson, and Human Rights Campaign national field director Marty Rouse.
The State of Marriage was written and directed by Jeff Kaufman, who produced the film with Marcia S. Ross. Executive Producers are Lola Van Wagenen and Buddy Steves.
In making the announcement, Kaufman said, "Marcia and I are proud to partner with The Orchard and present the courage, perseverance, vision, and humanity of people like Susan, Beth and Mary. They changed the lives of millions of people."
