The Gadget Show: Are Smartwatches A Gadget Too Far?

BIRMINGHAM, England, September 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --





A new YouGov poll* conducted for Channel 5's The Gadget Show has revealed that 91% of
us think that a smartwatch is a gadget too far. When asked the question "Is a smartwatch a
gadget you currently need?" more than nine out of every ten respondents answered "no".



Only a tiny 3.5% felt they did need a smartwatch, and 5.5% of those surveyed didn't
actually know what a smartwatch does.



The poll, commissioned by Channel 5 programme The Gadget Show, may spell worrying news
for major manufacturers such as Apple, Sony and Samsung who are trying to convince British
consumers to buy into the smartwatch market.



Smartwatch manufacturers say the devices help you reach for your mobile phone less
often by sending notifications of calls and text messages directly to your wrist, while
many offer an array of apps and health monitoring systems - but it seems that shelling out
for this luxury is a step too far for consumers.



The UK's leading technology show had further bad news for smartwatch manufacturers.
Presenter Jon Bentley asked a team of 6 members of the public to live with a smartwatch
for a week: the overall verdict at the end of the week was that smartwatches are still a
long way from being a must have gadget.



This poll will not help manufacturers such as Apple, Sony and Samsung as they struggle
to convince British consumers that smartwatches are the next big thing. And the results
contradict predictions being made by some analysts that Apple smartwatch sales alone will
hit 40 million globally in 2015.  Indeed, only 5 million smartwatches of all makes were
sold worldwide in Q2 of this year.
