Music Industry Rallies Against CBC Funding Cuts

Music Industry Rallies Against CBC Funding Cuts

TORONTO, Sept. 8, 2015 /CNW/ - Canadian Musician magazine has launched an online petition and campaign urging the music industry to oppose CBC funding cuts. Drastic cuts to the public broadcaster could have tremendous consequences for musicians, as a diminished CBC means less exposure for Canadian music, causing a negative trickle-down effect on the entire industry. The "Save Canadian Music: Keep the CBC Alive" petition is found at www.savethecbc.com.

Within 48 hours, the petition had 2,100 signatures and the support of JUNO-winners Arkells, Tegan & Sara, Sam Roberts Band, and Matthew Good, as well as Frank Davies, founder of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. It has now surpassed 5,000 supporters.

In particular, Canadian Musician takes issue with the $115 million cut from the CBC over the past three years. The cuts have resulted in 657 job losses and an additional 1,500 job cuts are planned by 2020. The dramatically reduced music coverage caused by this will have a negative economic impact, both direct and indirect, on all areas of the Canadian music industry.
