TORONTO, July 17, 2015 /CNW/ - PortsToronto today announced the movies that will screen at the 5(th) annual Sail-In Cinema floating movie festival being held August 20 to 22 at Sugar Beach. From a shortlist of 16 iconic "Flashback to the 80s" films, the public was invited to vote for their favourite films in order to determine this year's movie line-up. By the close of voting yesterday, a record-breaking 5,465 votes were cast and three clear favourites emerged for the free film festival.

Starring treasure hunters, ghost chasers and intergalactic visitors, this year's line-up offers film choices that everyone will enjoy. The following three movies will be projected onto Sail-In Cinema's four-storey floating movie screen this summer:

-- Ghostbusters on Thursday, August 20
-- The Goonies on Friday, August 21
-- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on Saturday, August 22

"It is great to see the community's enthusiasm for Sail-In Cinema and we are thrilled with the record-breaking number of votes that were cast to determine this year's films," said Deborah Wilson, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs. "With the 1980s offering so many memorable and iconic movies, voters had some tough decisions to make. The winning films - Ghostbusters, The Goonies and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - are perennial favourites that offer nostalgic appeal to those who grew up watching these classics but will also appeal to the uninitiated who may be watching these films for the first time. With this great movie line-up, we look forward to inviting the community down to the waterfront this August to enjoy their chosen favourites."

Registration for free landside tickets is now open at www.sailincinema.com. While Sail-In Cinema is a free event, there is limited seating on the landside and entry is subject to availability of space. Those who register online are also eligible to enter a contest to win a pair of tickets aboard Porter Airlines for any of the 22 destinations where the airline flies.

The first 500 attendees on site each night will receive special seating and have the opportunity to win prizes from Sail-In Cinema partners. The festival will feature a full program of pre-film events, activities and experiences to ensure an evening of fun for all in attendance. Boat mooring will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Sail-In Cinema - Toronto's only outdoor floating film event - will be held from August 20 to 22 at Sugar Beach located at 25 Dockside Drive. Each night at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.), boaters and landlubbers alike have the unique opportunity to watch movies from land or water on one of North America's largest screens, erected on a custom barge anchored in Toronto's harbour.

PortsToronto is delighted to have Toyota Canada back as Sail-In Cinema's Pre-Show Partner. Other partners this year include Redpath Sugar, Toronto Star, CP24, North American Logistics Services Inc., Porter Airlines and The Waterfront BIA.

Movie Synopsis

Ghostbusters (1984)
Three parapsychologists are kicked out of their positions at a university in New York City where they study the occult. They decide to set up shop in an old firehouse and become Ghostbusters, trapping troublesome ghosts, spirits, and poltergeists for a fee. They soon stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, one which will release untold evil upon the city, and are called upon to save the Big Apple. Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis.

The Goonies (1985)
Mikey and Brandon Walsh are brothers whose family is preparing to move because developers want to build a golf course in the place of their neighborhood -- unless enough money is raised to stop the construction of the golf course, and that's quite doubtful. But when Mikey stumbles upon a treasure map of the famed "One-Eyed" Willy's hidden fortune, Mikey, Brandon, and their friends, who call themselves The Goonies, set out on a quest to find the treasure in hopes of saving their neighborhood. Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
E.T. is a story of friendship and about an extraterrestrial from outer space who is accidentally stranded on Earth. In his search for refuge, E.T. wanders into a backyard where he is discovered by a ten-year-old boy. The boy assumes responsibility for the alien, as he desperately searches for a way to reunite the creature with his own kind and return him home. Starring Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore and Dee Wallace.
