Dramatic Red Star® Rescue Lifesaving Mission of Hundreds of Dogs and Cats Featured on American Humane Association's Weekly Radio Show
"Be Humane(TM) with Dr. Robin Ganzert" features VIPs who were instrumental in helping to move animals from overcrowded rural shelters to forever homes, second chance at life
WASHINGTON, June 4, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For some 200 dogs and a handful of cats in rural Virginia and Alabama, a second chance at life was just an adventurous trip away. Last week, two dramatic cross-country transports of animals to forever homes in New York and Florida took place, and two of the event's key partners joined American Humane Association president and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert as special guests on the latest episode of her "Be Humane(TM) with Dr. Robin Ganzert" show on Pet Life Radio. Debi Boies, the co-founder of Pilots N Paws, and Paul Raybould, American Humane Association's Chief Innovation Officer, joined Dr. Ganzert to talk about this massive effort to save lives and shine a light on the issue of overcrowded shelters in rural areas of this country, where healthy, adoptable animals are all-too-frequently euthanized. The episode is now available for streaming at http://www.petliferadio.com/behumane.html and on a number of podcast providers.

This week-long effort was a collaboration between American Humane Association; North Shore Animal League America; Pilots N Paws; philanthropist Lois Pope; animal lover, longtime volunteer and foster parent for North Shore Animal League America and co-host of the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards Beth Stern; the Petco Foundation, which donated much-need supplies for the animals; A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue; and 22 rescue groups.
On May 26, one of American Humane Association's two 50-foot Lois Pope Red Star® Rescue Vehicles and one of North Shore Animal League's mobile rescue trucks transported 115 animals from Martinsville, Virginia to North Shore's shelter facility in New York. The Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicle then drove to Greenville, Alabama to help with the Pilots N Paws airlift involving 10 planes and another 100 dogs and cats to airports across Florida on Saturday May 30. Two of the 10 planes departing Greenville flew to North Palm Beach County Airport to be met by philanthropist Lois Pope, the South Florida-based Red Star team and the local Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicle. Raybould was there for every step of the journey, riding with the Red Star Rescue team from Virginia to New York then down to Alabama, where he then took to the air in a Pilots N Paws plane.
"Every year some 6-8 million animals enter our nation's shelters and sadly 3-4 million of those are euthanized due to overcrowding, many of them healthy and adoptable," said Dr. Ganzert. "Listen to this week's episode and you will hear from two heroes who are helping to get animals out of these shelters and into forever homes. Debi has done wonderful work through her Pilots N Paws organization and was there in Alabama to coordinate the massive animal airlift while Paul was on the road and in the air all week, accompanying these animals on every step of the journey. Our deepest thanks to Mrs. Lois Pope for her compassion for the nation's shelter animals. She is our light of compassion and inspires our work every day."
