Graduating High School Seniors Recognized for Academic Achievement and Community Service
BOSTON, June 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities and to empower and enrich lives, today announced the 2015 recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program. The program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, recognizes students' leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service.
Robert A. DeLeo, Speaker of the House, joined Comcast executives in awarding the scholarships at the State House earlier today. One hundred eleven of the 2015 Massachusetts Leaders and Achievers recipients received $1,000 scholarships and one lucky student was awarded a $10,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship - instituted in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation - for a total of $121,000 awarded in Massachusetts this year.
"In order to build a brighter future, we must celebrate and support students who strive to improve their communities, reach their full potential and give back in a unique and personal way," said House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo. "The Comcast Foundation recognizes that through civic involvement and generosity, businesses can help exceptional students become exceptional leaders. Congratulations to all of the recipients and best of luck."
"These students have not only posted strong academic results, but they have also demonstrated leadership in school activities and shared a strong commitment to community service," said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast's Greater Boston Region. "We are proud to recognize the success and potential of such outstanding student leaders, all of whom are preparing for the next step in their educational careers."
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
Local winners throughout Massachusetts have participated in a wide variety of community service activities, such as volunteering at Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boy Scouts of America.
Since the program's inception, more than $22.8 million in scholarship money has been presented to more than 23,000 scholarship winners nationwide. A list of the scholarship recipients in Massachusetts is detailed below.
