The Martian wins Audie Award for Best Science Fiction Audiobook

Matt Damon to star in Ridley Scott-directed film of the book.

NEW YORK, May 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Podium Publishing, a leading independent publisher of audiobooks, won its first Audie Award Thursday for The Martian, a New York Times and audible.com bestselling book written by Andy Weir.

Narrator RC Bray won in the competitive best Science Fiction Audiobook category. Podium Publishing also received four other Audie Awards nominations this year, a record for the Toronto-based audiobook publisher.

The Martian tells the story of an astronaut trapped and presumed dead on Mars. The film version of the science fiction thriller from Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott stars Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain and will be released on November 25, 2015.

The Martian's worldwide popularity came because of Podium Publishing's decision early in their existence to take a risk on then-unknown author Andy Weir. Weir had self-published the ebook before Podium stepped in and created the audiobook, leading to a publishing contract with Crown Publishing (Random House) and a Hollywood film deal.

The Audies are the premier awards program recognizing distinction in audiobooks. The awards were presented on May 28th at a gala ceremony in New York.
