SILVER SPRING, Md., Feb. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance) congratulates its long-time supporter and celebrity spokesperson, Julianne Moore, for winning "Best Actress in a Leading Role" during last night's 87(th) Annual Academy Awards. Moore won the Oscar® for her stellar performance as Alice Howland in the film, "Still Alice."

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in vital organs, including the brain, eyes, skin, liver, lungs, heart and kidneys. It is also the leading genetic cause of both autism and epilepsy. TSC affects about 50,000 in the United States and more than 1 million worldwide. Currently, there is no cure. Since 2010, there have been two FDA-approved treatments to shrink tumors in the brain and kidneys of those with TSC, and promising research continues for additional therapies to improve the quality of daily life for every individual with TSC.

Moore got involved with the TS Alliance when she met a toddler with TSC and his father by chance on the streets of New York City. Since then, she's been an ambassador for the organization, hosting high-profile fundraising events, testifying before Congress for increased Federal TSC research funding, promoting the Step Forward to Cure TSC® walkathon program and appearing in awareness-building videos and campaigns.
