The CBS Affiliate Family Joins the Rest of CBS, as Well as News Viewers Across the Nation, in Lamenting the Recent Loss of Bob Simon

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The passing of any family member is always tough, but the loss of Bob Simon tears at the heart in light of the sudden way he was taken from us and the hole he leaves in one of the crown jewels of our network--CBS News.

Bob was the definition of why CBS News is valued and cherished so highly by CBS affiliates everywhere. He was an enormous presence during his 47 years at CBS News. Honored more than 40 times with major awards--including 27 Emmys and four Peabody Awards--Simon epitomized what we all believe is the high ground held by our joint international, national and local news operations.

His outstanding reporting through more than 200 stories for "60 Minutes," his illustrious career that covered many of the most important stories of our era and his record as a correspondent in such war zones or violence-prone areas as Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus, the Falkland Islands, the Persian Gulf, Yugoslavia, Grenada, Somalia and Haiti speak to his drive to get the truth to an apprehensive world. His imprisonment and torture (along with three CBS News colleagues) at the hands of the Iraqi Army speaks to his commitment to his craft and his outright bravery.

Bob Simon lived one of the fullest lives possible, yet his death at age 73 seems so sudden and way too soon. We in the CBS affiliate family will greatly miss the curiosity and work ethic he brought to his reporting and high quality journalism.
