Rentrak Cross-Platform Entertainment Rankings - December 23, 2014

-Only Rentrak Precisely Measures Movies & TV Everywhere-

PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for Dec. 23, 2014.

As expected, Warner Bros.' third and final installment of the venerable "Hobbit" franchise topped the weekend in North America with $54.7 million (for Friday/Saturday/Sunday) and a whopping $89.1 million since its debut on Wednesday. "Battle of the Five Armies" and its $90.627 million cumulative would be more than the $73.65 million that last year's installment ("The Desolation of Smaug") opened to over three days and better than the $84.62 million that the first one ("An Unexpected Journey") earned during its opening weekend.

In the global arena, the diminutive "Hobbit" proved to be a giant at the worldwide box office as Warner Bros.' "Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" impressively generated $109 million internationally this weekend. Combined with its North American debut, it boasts a whopping $163.7 million in 60 territories. Having already opened last week in the international markets, the final installment in "The Hobbit" trilogy has earned more than $358.1 million to-date around the world.

Notably, the Bollywood comedy "P.K." from UTV earned over $22 million this weekend in just 21 international territories and broke into the North American top 10 in its debut in just 272 locations for a global total of nearly $26 million.

In DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals action, the August mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy" was number one in its debut on the sales chart, while the ever-present Disney juggernaut "Frozen" lands in second after an amazing 39 weeks in release! Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill who led rentals the prior week with the R-rated buddy cop comedy "22 Jump Street," swap places with Melissa McCarthy in "Tammy," which now tops the rental chart in its fifth week in release.

Movies on Demand also bows to the power of "Guardians of the Galaxy," which is number one on the chart, in its MOD debut and still stands as the top grossing movie released in theaters this year with over $332.5 million at the domestic box office. The R-rated buddy cop comedy "Let's Be Cops" featuring Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson follows in second place.

On the digital movie purchases and rentals chart, Fox's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" grabs the top spot and Fox takes second place as well with the YA action adventure "The Maze Runner."

Finally our cable TV engagement chart sees a changing of the guard with TNT's "Major Crimes" taking the honors this week and Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" landing in the second place spot. Meanwhile, Telemundo's always-popular "Senora Acero" and Univision's "Mi Corazon es tuyo" made it a one-two punch at the top of our broadcast TV engagement listings. The top social media activity across broadcast and cable telecasts on our combined chart goes to FX's "Sons of Anarchy" followed by NBC's "The Voice" for a bit of a change up from the past few weeks.
