TuneCore Artist Survey Reveals Independent Artists Encouraged by Innovation in the Music Business and Optimistic about Future

NEW YORK, Nov. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- This has been an exciting year for streaming music; listenership continues to explode, and relationships between labels, musicians and new services are shifting. In order to keep up-to-date with what their artists are thinking, TuneCore, a leading digital music distribution and music publishing administration company, conducted a survey focusing on musicians' thoughts and expectations for the future of the music industry. Results indicate that the large group of stakeholders - independent musicians- whose voices are often overshadowed by the major labels and big-name musicians - are quite optimistic about their future and see real value in digital streaming and downloads. Key findings include:

-- Artists strongly believe that streaming makes it easier for new fans to
find their music and they see it as a driver of the business' future.
-- Artists value platforms like iTunes, Spotify and YouTube for
distribution and social networks like Facebook and Twitter for
connection with those fans around the world.
-- Artists recognize the ability to get their music out without a label as
the most important digitally-driven change to the music business.
-- Artists understand the value in being able get their music out to fans
anywhere in the world.
-- Artists project that performance will be the largest income driver in
five years, with revenues from distribution via streaming and downloads
expected to come in second; they also see licensing as a growing income
driver in the years to come.
The survey results are based on an online survey of TuneCore music distribution account holders, a total of 1,112 responses were received. The full survey results are available upon request.

"Information gained from surveys like this one is an example of the many ways TuneCore is gaining insights into the needs of our customers.
