PhillySchoolChoice.com Launches Radio Campaign; There's Another Side to the Charter School Story
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- PhillySchoolChoice.com has launched a radio ad campaign to tell the other side of the charter school financing story. The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) has attacked charter schools and their advocates recently, claiming that charter school funding is draining resources from traditional public school classrooms.
David Hardy, Spokesman for PhillySchoolChoice.com responded saying, "How are the schools that spend less per student the cause of the district's financial problems? The only way to reach that conclusion is if you want to protect the district from charter school competition and pay the district for the students it no longer teaches. On the contrary, the funding for students should be based purely on grade and special needs. After that, the parents should pick the schools, the money should follow the students and the financial chips ought to fall where they may. Student-based budgeting would put parents in charge, not politicians, bureaucrats or unions."
Philadelphia's School Reform Commission (SRC) recently canceled the PFT's contract after two years of unsuccessful negotiations over whether members would to contribute a small amount towards their health benefits. The SRC has also started accepting new charter school applications for the first time in years. School choice advocates see the two events as potential drivers for the expansion of parental educational choice in Philadelphia.
Bob Bowdon, Executive Director of Choice Media which produced and financed the ads, said, "Not all charter schools are great, but there are some great charter schools in Philadelphia with waiting lists of over a thousand families. These schools do better, spend less per student and Philly parents want more of them. Expanding their enrollments ought to be a no-brainer."
The PhillySchoolChoice.com ad explaining charter school funding will air during morning and afternoon drive times on WURD 900AM, KYW 1060AM and WPHT 1210AM for the next month. The radio ad can be heard here: http://www.phillyschoolchoice.com/#!radio/cjdm
The PhillySchoolChoice.com campaign has gained the support of thousands of Philadelphia parents who want to learn more about moving their children into charter schools or accessing the tax credit scholarships. Their recent TV ad campaign has been cited in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Public Record, Politico, National Review and the Wall Street Journal.
