A First for Edinburgh Festival Fringe - The Fringe Orchestra Challenge

A First for Edinburgh Festival Fringe - The Fringe Orchestra Challenge

EDINBURGH, August 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

Whilst loitering with insane intent around the London Underground's many tube
stations, Shaun Buswell got his comical spiel off to a tuneful tee. The aim of his
loitering? To form an orchestra from strangers travelling as passengers on the London
Underground. With a spate of succinct perfectly timed sentences Shaun asked 328 musical
passengers (not buskers - that was deemed too easy!) over 346 days if they would like to
join his Underground Orchestra "yes? no? maybeee?"

Shaun is bringing his story of the "Tube Orchestra Challenge" to this year's Edinburgh
Festival Fringe but not only that he will be attempting another challenge - to form an
Edinburgh Fringe Orchestra. He will have just 10 days from Friday 1st - Sunday 10th August
to complete his 'Fringe Orchestra Challenge' and form an orchestra from scratch by finding
musicians in Edinburgh with the aim of a performance on Monday 11th August.

Shaun Buswell started his "Tube Orchestra Challenge" on the London Underground on 1st
January 2012, with the goal of creating an Orchestra made up of musicians he met as
strangers amongst the daily mayhem of travelling on the London tube. The challenge
involved various rules including that the orchestra (30-100 piece) would have to be formed
by the date 12.12.12 and must perform at a top London Venue.

During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Shaun will be delivering an amusing and inspiring
presentation taking listeners on an emotional journey through the trial of his London
based tube orchestra challenge. Facilitated by documentary footage, film of live musical
performances, video diary clips, projected presentations and a hoard of humorous
anecdotes, Shaun's Dave Gorman-esque account of his experience is a busy train ride of
torment and tales.

"Buswell led us on a celebration of kindness and diversity." The Upcoming

"Don't even tell me you don't think this guy is incredibly cool" Being British is
Awesome

"Shaun recruited a 70-piece symphony orchestra while travelling on the Underground,...
introducing himself to anyone who was carrying a musical instrument. The 12.12.12
orchestra has just given a well-received concert at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, in aid
of children's charities. Shaun deserves a grant from the Arts Council and the chance to
play at Clarence House." The Independent/Janet Street-Porter

Shaun's show has been selected by PBH Free Fringe to feature at the famous Edinburgh
Festival Fringe.

Shaun says "I can't wait to bring my show to Edinburgh, I had an incredible journey in
2012 and its great to tell the story of my orchestra challenge(s). There were lots of
highs and lows throughout, from quitting my job to playing on the London Eye, the
orchestra appearing on BBC TV and in worldwide press, all while raising awareness of the
childrens charity Daytrippers.

I'm fascinated with the philosophy of the kindness of strangers, and the Fringe is one
of the most cultured places on the planet, so that's why I am going to attempt another
challenge there. I'll try and form a 'Fringe Orchestra' while I'm in Edinburgh, so
musicians I'll be looking for you!"

Shaun's show "The Tube Orchestra Challenge" takes place from 4th-8th & 11th-13th
August at The Electric Circus (Venue 98) at 12.45pm. Entry is free as part of the PBH Free
Fringe.

Shaun's "Fringe Orchestra Challenge" performance will take place on Monday 11th August
at The Jam House (Venue 44) at 5pm. Entry is free as part of the PBH Free Fringe
