'Water Warriors' Photo and Video Exhibit Narrates Canadian Indigenous Group's Struggle Against Gas Industry

'Water Warriors' opening reception will take place Friday, May 30th from 7pm-10pm as the soft launch and sneak preview of Be Electric, a new, 5000 square foot photo/video rental studio and event space in Bushwick, Brooklyn

NEW YORK, May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Water Warriors is a powerful documentary photo and video exhibition opening on Friday, May 30th, narrating a Canadian indigenous group's fight to protect their land from the destructive forces of the oil and gas industry.

Photographers Andrew Stern and Michael Premo form a rich, visual story of the ongoing struggle of the Mi'kmaq people set against the backdrop of the watery landscapes of New Brunswick. "The intensity of this fight and the odds the Mi'kmaq people face is gripping. We felt an obligation and an inspiration to tell this story to the world" said Stern of the project.

The exhibit, curated by Genevieve Fussell and Siobahn Riordan, brings to light a crucial struggle for indigenous sovereignty The Guardian called "the frontline of a democratic fight". Critically acclaimed sculptor Josh Hadar will compliment the imagery with his stunning solar-powered metal sculptures in Be Electric's expansive new event space. This opening will be the kick-off to Bushwick Open Studios 2014 with gallery showings on May 31st and June 1st from 12-7pm.

About The Artists And Curators

Andrew Stern is a photographer primarily focused on social and political issues. His award winning work has appeared in Harpers, The New York Times, Readers Digest, The Guardian and others.

Michael Premo is an artist, journalist and documentary storyteller. He has created works for The Civilians, StoryCorps, Sandy Storyline, Housing is a Human Right, Village Voice, NY Times and more.

Josh Hadar is a critically acclaimed and world-renowned sculptor who is currently on display in Times Square.

Genevieve Fussell is a photo editor at The New Yorker where she commissions international and political coverage for the magazine.

Siobhan Riordan works with the Documentary Photography Project at Open Society Foundations where she focuses on developing the Moving Walls exhibition series.

About The Studio

Be Electric is a new photography/videography rental studio and event space located in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Having lived in the area for over a decade, photographer Andrew Stern and carpenter/designer Joseph Mallo saw the need for a professional studio that is both affordable for a range of budgets, and yet has all the equipment and amenities of a world class facility.
