Small Gardening Changes That Make Huge Ecological Differences

Kim Eierman

Founder

EcoBeneficial!

"Small changes in the way we garden can make huge ecological differences. While you may love your butterfly bush, it's starving the caterpillars of monarchs and other treasured butterflies. If you want to support butterflies, you must include 'host plants,' like milkweed, instead. Plant it and they will come! Skip those double-flowered plants, which may be beautiful, but have little to no nectar or pollen for our challenged bees and other pollinators, and no seeds for birds. Find the beauty in ecological function. In the fall migrating birds depend upon highly nutritious native berries filled with fats and proteins. Good luck to them, as most American landscapes only offer exotic plants with sugary fruit - junk food for birds. Every plant choice matters, every landscape matters."

Eierman is available to discuss gardening for environmental improvement, ecological landscapes, sustainable gardening, native plants, wildlife and habitat gardening, gardening to support bees and other pollinators, butterflies, beneficial insects and birds, edible landscaping, urban landscaping, and gardening best practices. She teaches at New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, The Native Plant Center, Rutgers, and is an adjunct professor at Westchester Community College. She is an active public speaker and writer on many ecological gardening topics.

Is an Actor's Performance Protected by a Copyright?

James Grimmelmann, JD

Professor of Law

University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law

"It's amateur hour at the Ninth Circuit. The opinion features the kind of reasoning I'd expect from a bright but careless student, someone who knows the basic concepts of copyright but not how they fit together. Now anyone whose expression appears in a film and who doesn't have a signed work-for-hire agreement has a sufficiently plausible copyright claim to wave around the threat of an injunction to shut down distribution. Even if only one in twenty of them succeed, that's enough of a threat to coerce settlements from studios that have committed to a release and can't afford to miss their launch window. And that one case in twenty will wreak havoc. It's not just actors. It's set dressers, Foley artists, camera operators, even the guy playing the bassoon on the soundtrack."

Grimmelmann is available to discuss Internet privacy law and technology, copyright issues, net neutrality, Google, Microsoft and the law, telecommunications law, bitcoin, cybersecurity/wikileaks, intellectual property and big data. He is author of "Internet Law: Cases and Problems 3.0" and contributing author to "Cybercrime: Digital Cops in a Networked Environment." Prior to becoming a professor of law, he was a programmer at Microsoft. He has served as a resident fellow of the Information Society Project at Yale, as a legal intern for Creative Commons and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He co-authored Brief of 36 Intellectual Property and Copyright Law Professors as Amicus Curiae, ABC v. Aereo, filed before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Chase Bank's Notice to Porn Stars That Their Accounts Are Being Closed

David Mech

Documentary Film Producer

Shorts & Sandals Entertainment

"As is evident from the recent closure of their bank accounts by Chase Bank, adult film performers continue to face mainstream discrimination as a result of their perfectly lawful employment choices. States should expand upon what California, New York, Colorado, and North Dakota have already done by passing legislation to protect lawful, off-duty employee conduct."

Mech is available to discuss the social stigma associated with working in the adult film industry, as well as recent news that Chase Bank has alerted porn stars that their accounts would be closed. He has produced a documentary called "Risky Business: A Look Inside America's Adult Film Industry" and written a book "Obscene Thoughts: A Pornographer's Perspective on Sex, Love, and Dating. He has a BA in finance from Michigan State University and an MS in information management from Arizona State University College. He is also a Ph.D. student in computer science at Florida Atlantic University.

If George Clooney Can Finally Commit To Marriage, So Can Your Boyfriend

Dr. Wendy James

Owner

Life Consultants

"As millions of women across the world were saddened of the news of George Clooney being off the market, there is something they should all be aware of: If a serial bachelor like Clooney can finally commit to marriage then so can your boyfriend. Men tend to be very simple and often times they will finally run to marriage if they are happy, if they are comfortable, and if they realize that they can maintain this happiness and comfort for the foreseeable future. Your man may be madly in love with you but, they may not be in love with the stereotypical idea of marriage which decrees a dramatic increase in responsibly, a lock down in personal freedom, the end of fun, the end of exciting times - total nonsense. Your marriage can be as exciting and as wonderful as you want it to be and if you let your boyfriend know this, his perspective might change all together. If your man won't commit to marriage in the near future, he might not be the right one for you and this can be very hard to realize. Being willing to walk away from an unsuccessful relationship means having the courage to walk closer to the most successful relationship of your life (one in which you are married). George Clooney should prove to all men and women that if you meet someone you truly love and you never want to let them go that you'll do anything it takes to keep them in your life -- including getting married."

Dr. James is a psychologist and owner of Life Consultants. She is also author of the new book "The Princess Chronicles - A Bedside Companion" (November 2013). She is available for interviews in studio, Skype, and by phone. She was recently interviewed on HLN to discuss NFL player Aaron Hernandez's murder case.

How Donald Sterling's Remarks Affect the Clippers' Brand

Roshini Rajkumar

Communication Consultant

Roshini Performance Group

"Even though he's a sports figure, he still needs to understand he's part of a brand. And anything he does contributes or hurts not only that team, but the NBA brand overall. Even banning him won't help the stain this puts on the franchise and the league."

Rajkumar is available to discuss Clippers' owner Donald Sterling's recent racist remarks, how the Clippers communication and management can recover from it, and advice for sports management executives on avoiding this kind of situation in the first place. She consults with the Minnesota Vikings, the Wild and other sports management organizations. She has consulted with Fortune 500 business executives, personalities, and corporate teams, including the CEO of Bridgestone Americas and various executives at Medtronic. A former TV news journalist, she hosts a weekly show on CBS Radio Minneapolis and is a frequent guest expert on TV and radio programs providing analysis about effective communication, fixing business blunders, and politicians' or other high-profile people's communication styles. She is a licensed attorney (JD, University of Minnesota) and holds a BA in political science and international studies from Boston College. She is the author of Communicate That!: Your Toolbox for Powerful Presence and teaches leadership communications at the St. Catherine's University in St. Paul

Good Skincare: Do You Know It or Do You Blow It?

Susan Stuart

Dermatologist

La Jolla Skin

"Many patients feel they are doing everything right and still are unsatisfied with the appearance of their skin. Some patients feel they are doomed to bad skin based on myths that 'you get the genes your parents have.' It's important to set the record straight on what really does sabotage the skin and dispel the most common myths mothers or the media have passed on to their daughters."

Stuart is available to discuss mole removal and skin cancer diagnosis and treatment; medical spa services including microdermabrasion, facials and massage; injectables and fillers, including Botox; laser treatments including laser hair removal and tattoo removal.
