Former Senate Majority Leader Joins TideSmart Talk with Stevoe

Former Senate Majority Leader Joins TideSmart Talk with Stevoe

Former Maine U.S. Senator George Mitchell featured on May 24th show

FALMOUTH, Maine, May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In an interview earlier this week with TideSmart Talk with Stevoe, a weekly radio show that takes a macro approach towards society and culture, host Steve Woods held a phone interview with former United States Senate Majority leader Senator George Mitchell.

The show will air Saturday, May 24(th) from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on News Talk WLOB 1310AM and will be live streamed at http://www.wlobradio.com. A podcast will be made available via iTunes and at http://www.tidesmartradio.com.

During the show's first hour, Mitchell told Woods how he became involved in politics. "It was through the influence of Senator Edmund Muskie," Mitchell said "He was a great senator and a great man. He was, after my parents, the most influential person in my life by far."

Mitchell discussed his public service career, which includes serving in the U.S. Senate from 1980 to 1995, and as senate majority leader from 1989 to 1995. Woods described Mitchell as an "Iconic patriot, illustrated by the fact that in 1988, he was reelected with 81% of the vote, the largest margin in the history of Maine."

Mitchell talked about his experiences in the U.S. Senate and the climate working with people on both sides of the aisle compared with today's environment. "The personal attacks that are so much a part of our politics today are not essential in advancing public interest," said Mitchell. "The day I was elected senate majority leader, I called Bob Dole, the minority leader, and laid down basic standards of conduct. We would never embarrass or surprise each other, and never personalize the issues. Our friendship and our trust in each other is rock solid to this day."

Mitchell also discussed Mitchell Institute and what prompted him to establish the scholarship, which each year provides a college scholarship to one student from every high school in Maine. Mitchell said that his goal in life is that "not one child in Maine will be denied the opportunity of a college education purely for financial reasons," the former senator said. To date, the scholarship has provided 2,300 Maine students with $11-$12 million in direct financial assistance.

Since launching TideSmart Talk with Stevoe more than one year ago, Woods has hosted more than 150 high-profile guests including famed attorney F. Lee Bailey, two-term Maine Governor John Baldacci, Swordfish Boat Captain Linda Greenlaw, Shipyard Brewing Company President Fred Forsley, U.S. Senator Angus King, longtime Maine broadcast journalist Bill Green, President of Bates College Clayton Spencer, Maine's Attorney General Janet Mills, Portland Sea Dogs Owner Bill Burke, U.S. Congressman Mike Michaud, Portland Mayor Michael Brennan, Vice President of Clinical Affairs at University of New England Dr. Dora Mills, Maine Senate President Justin Alfond and former congressman Tom Allen.
