Cucalorus seeks submissions for 20th anniversary film festival

WILMINGTON, N.C., May 21, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cucalorus seeks bold, innovative, funny, and challenging films for its November film festival. Known for its gorgeous riverside setting and its laid-back, rock n' roll atmosphere, Cucalorus is a five-day showcase of independent and international film. Filmmakers from all over the world join cultural explorers to watch movies and share ideas, transforming the port city's enchanting historic downtown into a temporary city of artists. The schedule pairs big name festival hits with a strong international program and a huge selection of shorts (more than 140 screened in 2013). An extensive community engagement campaign connects the daring documentaries in the Voices and Works-in-Progress programs with unexpected audiences.

Cucalorus is a non-competitive celebration with programs dedicated to social justice, emerging artists, works-in-progress, shorts, dance, music videos, and North Carolina. Cucalorus invites submissions from choreographers for Dance-a-lorus, the festival's opening night blend of film and dance. The Visual/Sound/Walls program is accepting music videos and installation proposals. Festival organizers will launch a family films program this year to include a selection of features suitable for kids ages 12 and under.

"Cucalorus is a joyful amalgamation of interdisciplinary art, a top-quality selection of international and local films, and an intimate bonding experience fueled by bonfires and moonshine." (Kelly Leow, MovieMaker Magazine, 2013)

Highlights from the past 20 years include notable films like The Slaughter Rule, Elephant, Precious, George Washington, Taxi to the Dark Side, Short Term 12, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Dogtooth. The festival has supported a growing group of alumni throughout their careers - filmmakers like Erica Dunton, Josephine Decker, Marco Williams, Geoff Marslett, Joe Swanberg, Jonathan Caouette, and Zach Clark.

For more information about submitting a film, dance project, or a music video, visit our website or contact programming coordinator Natalie Lentz at programming@cucalorus.org. All film submissions must include an entry form, submission fee, and either an invitation to your funeral OR a postcard from your future self in 20 years. Filmmakers living in the City of Wilmington do not have to pay entry fees. The early deadline is June 18(th). For more information visit: www.cucalorus.org/submit_a_film.asp.
