Music Festival Season and the Danger of Party Drugs

Music Festival Season and the Danger of Party Drugs

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As warm weather, Spring Break, and the kick-off of seasonal music festivals is upon us, so are the dangers of so-called party drugs that fuel many people's fun. Unfortunately, the use of both legal and illegal substances--under party settings in particular--can spark overdoses, hospitalizations, and in some cases exacerbate addiction or mental health issues.

Popular party drugs include cocaine, ketamine, MDMA (in different forms), LSD, mushrooms, and marijuana among others. These substances alone can threaten an individual's health, but when used in combination or with alcohol in the generally dehydrating circumstances of a major social event, the brain and body are put in even greater risk.

"What many people fail to realize is that ecstasy and other party drugs produce nerve cell damage which can result in long-term cognitive impairments," explains Morningside Recovery therapist Jacqueline Hoagland. "Problems with memory, mood, and controlling emotions can manifest, because important neurotransmitters and receptors in the brain are affected by these substances."

Furthermore, because most drugs are augmented or spiked with unknown chemicals and substances to evade law enforcement and make them more addictive, it's nearly impossible to know what you're putting in your body.

Morningside Recovery offers non-lockdown treatment in Costa Mesa, CA, to improve the lives of those afflicted with addiction or mental illness.
