Sochi Hopefuls Compete In Season's First USSA Selection Event

Taylor Gold rounds out the podium at Breckenridge Ski Resort

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo., Dec. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In a thrilling finish at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships first final of the day Greg Bretz won the men's Snowboard Superpipe Finals, and 1,000 points towards his USSA standings. The iON Mountain Championships serves as the first official U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Olympic team selection event of the 2013-2014 season. Excitement levels were high and the suspense carried on through the very end of the competition with Shaun White's final run, which placed him in second. Bretz claimed the coveted Dew Cup with a score 91.40, and a run that featured a frontside double 1080, cab double 1080, frontside 900, backside 900, frontside 1080 and cab 1080. Shaun White took second with a score of 90.40; Taylor Gold finished third with 89.60.

"I'm excited to be at the Dew Tour and for my first big win," said Greg Bretz after the competition. "I'm so stoked it's an Olympic selection event, and I was able to come out on top. I just try to ride for myself and stay away from what other people are doing. It ended up working out, and I am super stoked about it."

After landing a backside air, frontside double cork 1080, cab double cork 1080, frontside 540, double mctwist 1260 to a backside rodeo, Shaun White took second on the podium. White's performance on the superpipe, which at 600 feet in length is currently the longest in the world, earned him 800 points in the USSA standings. White will compete in the Men's Snowboard Slopestyle Final tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT and 3 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

White congratulated Bretz after the event, stating, "He's a great rider!" His focus now turns to tomorrow's event, of which he said, "I'm ready for slopestyle. Just keep going!"

This is the first of four contests today at Breckenridge Ski Resort, as the women take the stage this afternoon in the Snowboard Superpipe Finals and Freeski Slopestyle Finals. Today's Dew Tour schedule will conclude with the Men's Freeski Superpipe Finals.
