Brian Williams Talks About Joining NBC 20 Years Ago, HBO's Girls and Super Bowl 2014

NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Brian Williams, Anchor and Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, opened up to Jonathan Tisch, Chairman of Loews Hotels & Resorts and a co-owner of the New York Giants, in front of a sold out crowd at the 92nd Street Y Wednesday evening.

Twenty years ago this week, Williams was saying goodbye on the noon news at WCBS in New York City one day before starting his career at NBC News when he learned of the first attack on the World Trade Center. "It is hard to believe it has been twenty years since that day," Williams said.

Since joining NBC, Williams has covered some of the most important issues of our time. He reflected on his memories of Katrina and the recent tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Katrina offended me." Williams said, "I watched human beings in New Orleans being valued less than the human beings in my family."

Williams described Newtown as, "The saddest place on Earth." He characterized the tragedy as, "The confluence of mental illness and firearms."

Allison Williams, daughter of the network anchor and star of the award-winning HBO series Girls, was in the audience as Williams spoke of his pride at her accomplishments and how his life has changed since Girls premiered last year, "I'm already getting recognized as Allison's father. I am two weeks away from being a walking human asterisk." Williams told Tisch how long his daughter has wanted to be an actress, "She came out of womb singing 'There's No Business Like Show Business.'"

The New Jersey native shared his thoughts about Super Bowl 2014 coming to the New York, New Jersey area saying, "This will be the game as our creator intended it. In New Jersey, in the winter."

Williams also had some recommendations for Tisch who is the co-chair of the 2014 Host Committee. "I could argue for a New Jersey all-star team for the halftime show since it's my state's time to shine. We've got Bruce. We've got Bon Jovi. We've even got Danny DeVito," Williams said.

Tisch interviews journalists, celebrities and tastemakers as part of the "92Y Talks" lecture series. Some of his past guests include Alicia Keys, Gayle King, Larry King, Anna Wintour and Ian Schrager.
