MEGA 107.5's Edgar "Shoboy" Sotelo wins $25,000 grant for Dallas-based nonprofit
CHICAGO, Dec. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Edgar "Shoboy" Sotelo, the enthusiastic radio personality of the "Shoboy en la mañana" morning show on Mega 107.5 in Dallas and a committed volunteer for the Magdaleno Leadership Institute, has been selected by a public online vote as the 2012 MillerCoors Líder of the Year. Edgar will receive a $25,000 grant for the Magdaleno Leadership Institute to implement a Latino leadership project with MillerCoors.
"I am honored to have been selected as the 2012 MillerCoors Líder of the Year and grateful for the platform that God has given me to continue serving our community," said Edgar. "I want to thank everyone who voted for me--with your votes you have invested in the future of our tremendous servant leaders at the Magdaleno Leadership Institute and the thousands of lives they will inspire. Keep serving the community and 'no te aguites' (don't let anything bring you down)."
Edgar was among 12 outstanding Latino leaders nominated by local and national nonprofit organizations for their leadership and contributions to their communities.
"As a local celebrity, Edgar has used his influence to make a difference in his community, and that is one of the marks of a true leader," said Jose Ruano, manager, multicultural community commerce and partnerships at MillerCoors. "This year's competition among the 12 Líderes was very tough, as each is an incredible example of Latino leadership. We are proud to continue highlighting the work of Latinos in our communities, such as Edgar, and trust that they will positively influence future generations."
Edgar is a volunteer for the Magdaleno Leadership Institute, a Dallas-based nonprofit devoted to building communities for the purposes of service leadership, academic excellence, and civic empowerment. His work in the community focuses on empowering Latinos to reach for their highest dreams. He established the "Shoboy's Mega Beca," a scholarship fund for first-generation Latino college students and has hosted several "radio-thons" to raise funds and awareness for the victims of natural disasters, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the Children's Medical Center.
"When I was chosen as the Líder of the Year two years ago, I was inspired to establish the Magdaleno Leadership Institute to empower students to become servant leaders and serve our community in a spirit of excellence," said Raul Magdaleno, founder of the Magdaleno Leadership Institute and 2010 MillerCoors Líder of the Year. "Now I am proud to pass the baton to Edgar, one of our most dedicated volunteers, to receive this coveted and well deserved honor. The $25,000 award will be invaluable for us to continue our mission of building more servant leaders for our country."
