Veteran Singer-Songwriter Joel Rafael To Walk For Huntington's Disease In Honor Of Woody Guthrie In Phoenix, AZ On November 17th

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- California songwriter and seminal folk artist Joel Rafael will be participating in Huntington's Disease Society of America Inc. Pacific Southwest Region's Team Hope Walk on November 17th. Rafael, a foremost Woody Guthrie interpreter will be walking with Guthrie's first wife Mary, who is now 95. Both Guthrie and his two daughters with Mary died from Huntington's Disease. The walk will commence at 10AM. At 10:30 AMRafael will play a live set of songs at the event.
Over four decades, Joel Rafael has chronicled his life and the world around him with songwriting rooted in folk tradition; and no influence is more obvious in his work than that of Woody Guthrie. In 1981, Joel released his debut album, Dharma Bums.Rafael's newest album, America Come Home, was released this year, on Inside Recordings.
Joel Rafael honors the songs of Woody Guthrie on two of his albums, Woodeye (2003) and Woodyboye (2006), which feature five previously unpublished Guthrie lyrics given to him by Nora Guthrie, to which he composed the music. The albums were reissued in 2009 on Inside Recordings as the two-CD collection, The Songs of Woody Guthrie, Volumes 1 and 2. This year, two of Rafael's co-writes with Guthrie appear in Every 100 Years - The Woody Guthrie Songbook, published by the Woody Guthrie Archives in honor of Woody's centennial year.
Joel Rafael has been writing and performing since 1978 and over the past decades has released a stunning collection of eight Americana albums. He has shared the stage with artists such as Rick Danko, Emmylou Harris, John Lee Hooker, John Stewart, Laura Nyro and Taj Mahal, and he has collaborated with artists such as Jackson Browne, Rosie Flores, David Crosby & Graham Nash.
