Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Toronto International Film Festival Awards

TORONTO, Sept. 16, 2012 /CNW/ - Each year, the Toronto International
Film Festival (TIFF) Awards recognize the talent and the creativity of
esteemed Canadian and international artists who have distinguished
themselves through the richness and the diversity of their work.

For 37 years, TIFF has played a vital role in showcasing Canada and
Canadian films to international audiences and bringing some of the most
exciting new cinema that the world has to offer to Canadian audiences.
This year was no exception, as Toronto played host to the largest
number of world premieres in festival history--close to 150, from 72
countries. TIFF remains the largest film festival in North America and
one of the most influential in the world today. The directors, actors,
writers, animators and other industry professionals being honoured this
year have inspired us with their stories and their performances.

Our Government knows that film and television productions are essential
to the strength of our cultural life and our economic future. In
2010-2011, this sector represented $5.5 billion in economic activity
and employed 128,000 Canadians.

On behalf of all Canadians and the Government of Canada, I want to
commend the work of the Toronto International Film Festival and to
congratulate the talented nominees and winners of this year's TIFF
Awards.
