Bilateral Amputee Amy Purdy To Compete On CBS's Amazing Race

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Freedom Innovations, LLC, a leading developer of high technology lower-limb prosthetic medical devices, announced today that bilateral amputee Amy Purdy will be among the 11 teams to travel the world for the new season of the Amazing Race which premieres Sunday, Sept. 30 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. As a world-champion adaptive snowboarder and co-founder of Adaptive Action Sports, Purdy has inspired countless people by showcasing the capabilities of those living with limb loss. She sees the Amazing Race as an opportunity to bring this message to a broader audience. Purdy selected the Renegade® Prosthetic Foot, manufactured by Freedom Innovations, as the best technology to help her embark on the global journey.

Working with Freedom Innovations and SoCal Prosthetics in Irvine, California, Purdy and her prosthetists created two state-of-the-art artificial limbs featuring strong, ultra-lightweight materials, a set of custom-fit sockets and Renegade® carbon fiber prosthetic foot products which store and return energy while also providing shock absorption and comfort during high impact activities like running.

This season, which marks the series' 21st race around the world, will feature teams traveling through three continents and nine countries, covering more than 25,000 miles. Teams will be faced with challenges ranging from a 10-story rappel in Los Angeles to working as "rat collectors" in Bangladesh.

As Purdy set out on the Amazing Race, she knew it was going to be an extreme personal challenge but had a larger goal in mind.

"I wanted to show people what we are all capable of once we set our minds to something," stated Purdy. "And, although I saw this as an opportunity bigger than any personal achievement, I still had to be at my personal best- mind, body and prostheses. I trained as much as possible and chose a prosthetic system that could stand up to the challenge."

"I've never run so much in my life! I am beyond thankful for all the work and technology put into my prostheses," said Purdy. "And, in the end, I am able to say I'm really proud of myself and my performance in the race," Purdy said.

Purdy competed with Daniel Gale, her partner and co-founder of Adaptive Action Sports.
