The 78th San Mateo County Fair Announces the Highest Two-Year Averages in Decades

SAN MATEO, Calif., Aug. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Management at the San Mateo County Fair, "Where Tradition Meets Innovation", announced today that the two-year averages in attendance, competitive entries and variety of show is the highest it has been in decades, exceeding expectations on the heals of the 2011 Fair that broke records dating back several years.

"In 2010, we took a bold step to advance the San Mateo County Fair by moving the event from August to June," says Chris Carpenter, General Manager of the San Mateo County Event Center. "The last two years validated the move and solidified our Fair as the best entertainment value in the Bay Area. We have quickly gained recognition in excellence for cutting edge innovation, technology, culture and art based on the fifteen first place awards bestowed at the Western Fairs Association Annual Achievement Awards earlier this year."

The Fair opened in grand style on June 9(th) with the 8(th) Annual Disaster Preparedness Day. Congresswoman Jackie Speier and Adrienne Tissier of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors welcomed a standing room only crowd to the Fair.

"It is a big honor that Supervisor Tissier and Congresswoman Speier chose the Fair to host their important event at the opening of the Fair," says Carpenter. "Our citizens' pro-active emergency involvement is paramount to community safety. We are extremely pleased that we were able to reward our civic leaders with a 30% increase in attendance from last year's event."

Verizon Wireless Concert Series headliners included The Pointer Sisters, Boyz II Men, Foghat, Night Ranger, Evolution, Beatrice Adriana, K-Paz de La Sierra and area favorite Tower of Power - who recently celebrated their 40(th) year performing at the Fair. Dozens of daily shows originated from the Bud Light Blues and Brews Stage and the Wells Fargo Community Stage, while fairgoers were treated to interactive exhibits as they dove deep into science at the CuriOdyssey exhibit, got up close and person with parrots, jungle porcupines and anacondas at the Rainforest Adventure and learned how to animate at the Digital Monkey School.

"More than ever, our board of directors is committed to bringing an innovative mix of technology and education based exhibits and vendors, high-end entertainment to the Bay Area," says Carpenter. "Our sponsors and partners are also deeply invested and plied a vital role in the Fair's success, including: Sleep Train, Xfinity, Verizon Wireless, Wells Fargo and so many others. We are especially proud of Butler Amusements, which is a locally owned family business, who continue to provide safe, family-friendly amusement with our carnival and midway games."

The San Mateo County Fair was also home Bravo Network's filming of Silicon Valley, a new reality show premiering in the fall. After weeks of analyzing the best possible spot for series stars to film an entertaining evening, they chose the San Mateo County Fair and reported that the festive environment was the key aspect to the advancement of a difficult storyline.

Carpenter also cites the addition of Social Media to the mix of giving real time updates to those interested in the Fair. "We are extremely pleased with the implementation of Facebook and Twitter to the Fair's promotional cycle. We quadrupled the followers on Social Media, something that few other fairs have been able to successfully incorporate. We are proud that as a company based in Silicon Valley that we continue to be trailblazers in technology efforts."
