Eight Days and Counting: Bean Fails to Explain Why He Misled Listeners on Radio Interview
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Floridians for Ethics and Truth in Politics released a new television spot this week, documenting the controversial votes Aaron Bean cast on illegal immigration when he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives.
"For the eighth straight day, Aaron Bean has failed to explain his denial of his vote to give in-state tuition breaks to illegal aliens," said Mike Hanna of Floridians for Ethics and Truth in Politics. "The legal citizens of Florida deserve for Bean to own up to his record and, more importantly, explain why he would willingly lie about that record."
Last week, on a radio interview, Bean denied he ever voted for in-state tuition breaks for illegal aliens. He has yet to explain or clarify the inconsistency between his recent statements and his voting record.
The spot also covers the recent statement made by Bean's spokesman, who claims Bean never supported any benefits for illegal aliens, when, in fact, Bean also voted for health care subsidies for illegals in 2007.
"While it is common for politicians to regret past votes and take steps to explain away those votes, it is alarming that Aaron Bean would categorically deny what is recorded in black-and-white in the legislative record," said Mike Hanna. "Bean's personal discomfort with his past support for illegal immigration must be intense. He may sense that this issue could be the deal breaker for conservatives in Northeast Florida, both in Jacksonville and in his hometown of Fernandina Beach."
Script for "Illegal Immigration II" commercial:
VOICEOVER: May 2, 2005, Aaron Bean voted for in-state tuition breaks for illegal aliens. Just days ago in an interview, Bean denied it.
BEAN: "Never have supported that, never will support that."
NARRATOR: But wait, it gets worse. Bean's spokesman doubled down and said, "Bean had never supported any benefit for illegals."
But, in 2007 Bean voted to also give healthcare subsidies to illegal aliens.
Your record on illegal immigration is bad enough, Mr. Bean.
BEAN: "Never have supported that."
NARRATOR: Your lies just make it worse.
