The U.S. Army Showcases Its Talents At The 2012 Essence Music Festival

NEW ORLEANS, July 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army will participate in the Essence Music Festival, the nation's largest annual African-American event celebrating Black music and culture, July 5 - 9 in New Orleans. Army's schedule of activities will highlight its mission to help prepare and train the next generation of young Americans to be leaders in the world of technology.

"The Army is excited to showcase and talk to festival attendees about the wide range of leadership, high tech, science, engineering and educational opportunities available for the best and brightest young Americans," said Maj. Gen. Marcia Anderson, the nation's highest ranking African-American female Soldier in the Army. "The Essence Music Festival provides an excellent opportunity for Soldiers to connect with a very important audience of mothers, families and prospects."

The centerpiece of the Army's participation is an education empowerment panel featuring nationally recognized education advocates and experts to address the question "how prepared are America's youth to compete in the technology age?" Important elements of the discussion will include: an exploration of the state of African-American education; the education divide among America's students; and, the economic challenges facing potential African-American colleges. In addition, the Army will have a considerable presence at Essence's local youth and community enrichment event, "Own Your Power."

The U.S. Army is also one of the nation's largest providers of college scholarships, and in 2011 provided more than $230 million in ROTC scholarships, which included $100 million for HBCU students.

The Army Research Laboratory HBCU/MI program has provided more than $19 million to HBCU students for research and other initiatives since 2009.

The Army offers motivated men and women the chance to fulfill their potential and achieve life goals in any one of more than 150 different career options for Soldiers on Active Duty and more than 120 in the Army Reserve. Whether one pursues a career as a doctor, lawyer, chaplain, engineer, mechanic or journalist, almost any career choice found in civilian life is also offered in the Army. Army Soldiers receive ongoing career training and on-the-job experience second to none.
