Coast Radio Selects Exalt Microwave Backhaul Systems to Connect FM Radio Stations and Broadcast Sites
Owner of multiple FM radio stations in the San Francisco Bay area replaces expensive leased T1 lines with wireless links to carry its radio signals, voice and data communications
CAMPBELL, Calif., July 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Exalt Communications today announced that Coast Radio Company, Inc. has selected Exalt microwave backhaul systems to replace leased T1 connections among its multiple FM radio stations, main broadcast sites, and transmission booster sites located throughout the San Francisco Bay area. In addition to improving overall reliability compared to the T1 connections, the wireless backhaul network built using Exalt microwave systems will also extend IP communications to all sites, add advanced management features, and provide increased bandwidth.

Because Exalt systems natively support both TDM and IP, Coast Radio will avoid replacing thousands of dollars' worth of existing equipment as it transitions its network from the T1 lines to the Exalt microwave links and moves toward all-digital communications. Moreover, Exalt systems provide Coast Radio with the flexibility to dynamically reconfigure bandwidth on an as-needed basis without climbing towers to replace or modify the systems, and to optimize the performance of the network as their needs change over time.
"With the selection of microwave systems from Exalt, we will no longer be held hostage by our telecommunications service provider and their lack of urgency when it comes to our need for reliable network communications," said Coast Radio Chairman Jim Levitt. "As a customer-focused company, Exalt understands that a reliable signal is the lifeline of our business, and they delivered an exceptionally efficient, low-cost, and reliable system to meet our needs today and in the future."
Exalt microwave backhaul systems give Coast Radio the ability to manage its geographically-dispersed network from a central point, quickly identify any potential issues or needed adjustments, and send resources directly to those locations. Additionally, the bandwidth flexibility of Exalt systems enables Coast Radio to easily meet the increasing bandwidth needs of each radio station by allowing for more efficient traffic manipulation and optimization among stations and broadcast sites.
"When we started this project, it was designed to solve an issue we had with some unreliable network links," said Coast Radio Chief Engineer, John Higdon. "In addition to solving that problem, the Exalt systems also helped provide improved manageability of the network. For example, we now have IP to each of the sites covered under this umbrella, meaning we can conduct better monitoring and management from a central point, allowing us to quickly and efficiently send resources to any point of failure and have it repaired on the spot."
"Coast Radio faced an issue that many organizations are experiencing today - they've outgrown the capacity of their T1 lines and yet fiber either is not available or is cost-prohibitive, especially in areas like San Francisco where the terrain can be challenging or communities are against trenching fiber," said Mark Davis, senior director of product marketing for Exalt. "Our microwave systems provide Coast Radio with fiber-quality transmission of their most important business assets - their radio signals and enterprise communications - in a cost-effective solution that is easy to deploy, simple to manage, and easy to scale to support their business growth."
