Pandora Utilizes Fusion-io to Play Personalized Internet Radio

The Leading Personalized Radio Service Saves Energy and Scales With Rapid Audience Growth by Caching Music on Fusion ioMemory

SALT LAKE CITY, April 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Fusion-io (NYSE: FIO) today announced that the leading internet radio service Pandora Media, Inc. (NYSE: P) has deployed Fusion ioMemory to cache its music library, dramatically increasing server performance. The ioMemory deployment enables Pandora to continue to support its growing listener base with an environmentally responsible data center that features fewer, smaller, lower-power servers for reduced server sprawl and energy consumption.

Pandora accounts for more than 69% share of all Internet radio listening in the U.S. today. Pandora blends attributes of over-the-air radio with a combination of proprietary personalization and Internet technology, enabling personalized music listening and discovery for listeners' varying tastes and moods.

"Pandora is a pinnacle of innovation in online content delivery and its rapid growth had it facing similar challenges to other successful web leaders - scaling rapidly to meet booming growth," said Neil Carson, Chief Technology Officer, Fusion-io. "When listeners tune in, they expect music without interruption, so Pandora's team was committed to architecting a modern data center that would continue to deliver as the company grows. With Fusion-io, Pandora is able to meet these demands with a solution that uses far less energy, costing less for both Pandora and our planet."

As its listener base continues to grow, Pandora was looking for a way to scale for present and future data demand while also reducing its infrastructural footprint and overall costs. With ioMemory integrated into its servers and the Fusion ioSphere management system, Pandora was able to replace existing disk-based content servers that cached its most frequently requested songs in the company's music archive. The Fusion-io deployment ensures listeners consistent, high-performance for the entire Pandora content library, regardless of spikes in song popularity.

Pandora Vice President of Technical Operations Steve Ginsberg said, "We are pleased to announce our partnership with Fusion-io, which has allowed Pandora to create a more scalable and reliable storage strategy that better serves our more than 125 million listeners."

About Fusion-io
Fusion-io has pioneered a next generation storage memory platform for shared data decentralization that significantly improves the processing capabilities within a datacenter by relocating process-critical, or "active", data from centralized storage to the server where it is being processed, a methodology referred to as data decentralization. Fusion's integrated hardware and software solutions leverage non-volatile memory to significantly increase datacenter efficiency and offers enterprise grade performance, reliability, availability and manageability. Fusion's data decentralization platform can transform legacy architectures into next generation datacenters and allows enterprises to consolidate or significantly reduce complex and expensive high performance storage, high performance networking and memory-rich servers. Fusion's platform enables enterprises to increase the utilization, performance and efficiency of their datacenter resources and extract greater value from their information assets.
