Lincoln Park Student Named to All-National Orchestra

Violist Marissa Kolarosky among 300 to perform at Washington's Kennedy Center

MIDLAND, Pa., April 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Marissa Kolarosky, a Moon Township, Pa., resident and senior at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School has been named to the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) 2012 All-National Orchestra, performing on viola.

She is one of 300 students selected to perform June 24 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

"The students selected will rehearse with our inspiring conductors over four days, leading up to their performance at one of our country's most iconic performance venues, the Kennedy Center," said John Kuhner, chair of NAfME's National Honor Ensembles Task Force.

Kolarosky is a daughter of John and Evanne Kolarosky of Moon Township, Pa. She has studied piano for 11 years, violin for 10, and viola for five. At Lincoln Park she is a student of Mrs. Irena Trenga (piano), Mr. Roy Sonne (violin/viola), and Miss Marylene Gingras-Roy (viola).

As a violinist she played with Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra, Pittsburgh Youth Chamber Orchestra, Pittsburgh Youth Pops Orchestra, Beaver Valley Orchestra, and in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's 2010 Side-by-Side Concert. She was selected a 2010-2011 Steinway Young Artist and played viola in the 2011 PMEA All-State Orchestra.

She currently is a violist with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. On April 10 she played viola with the PYSO in its 2012 Side-by-Side Concert at Heinz Hall.

Kolarosky is president of the Tri-M Music Honors Society and National Honor Society at Lincoln Park, and plays in the pit orchestra for school productions.

NAfME established its National Honor Ensembles as the ultimate recognition of music student performance, beyond state and divisional levels.

"NAfME is pleased to offer this unique performance opportunity to a very select group of our nation's finest high school musicians," said Kuhner. "The 2012 NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles will surely be a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience."

National Association for Music Education, among the world's largest arts education organizations, marked its centennial in 2007 as the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. Through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and pre-service music teachers, and with 60,000 honor students and supporters, NAfME serves millions of students nationwide through activities at all teaching levels, from preschool to graduate school.

The Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School is a Pennsylvania public school combining a rigorous academic program with pre-professional training in music, theater, dance, creative writing, health science arts and media arts for grades 7-12. In its sixth year of operation, the school is located in the $28.5 million Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit regional asset in Midland, Pa., with a mission to advance culture, education and the arts.
