ActiveVideo Executive to Discuss How "Total Cloud" Approach Can Bridge Multi-Silo "Navigation Gap" at SCTE Canadian Summit

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Cliff Mercer, senior vice president, product development and customer solutions for ActiveVideo Networks(TM), will discuss how a television application platform based entirely in the network cloud can help cable system operators deliver optimal user experiences in a multi-source video environment at a leading international conference this week.

At the SCTE Canadian Summit, Mercer will discuss how a "Total Cloud" solution can enable cable system operators to quickly create and deploy advanced search and discovery interfaces -- for any digital set-top box -- that span advanced cable services, horizontally-scaled cloud-based services and Web-oriented services within existing cable infrastructure.

Mercer's presentation, entitled "Bridging the Navigation Gap - Creating a Comprehensive User Experience Across Multiple Silos," will be part of a session on "The Customer and the Cloud" at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27. SCTE Canadian Summit will be held March 27-28 at the Toronto Congress Centre.

"As the sheer quantity of available video grows, consumers are seeking simplified ways to find and view specific content," said Mercer. "A 'total cloud' approach can provide the ability to navigate simultaneously and intuitively through linear and on-demand video, as well as user-generated content and other applications."

Unlike "Partial Cloud" or device-based solutions, the "zero client" CloudTV(TM) platform places both the user interface and the application platform in the network cloud to enable unparalleled service velocity of new apps and navigation tools, without the lengthy authoring and regression cycles required by legacy STBs. The new CloudTV H5(TM) version allows any content or application that is created in HTML5 to be processed in the network cloud, and delivered as an MPEG or H.264 stream to any existing set-top box, as well as to connected TVs, tablets, and other devices.

Designed to interface seamlessly and scale quickly within existing cable operator network infrastructure, the CloudTV H5 platform executes and renders the complete application in the cloud. The application is delivered as a personalized, adaptive bit rate video stream to the set-top box or connected device, which simply passes remote control key clicks or keypad entries back through the network to the cloud with very low latency. Because CloudTV leverages processing in the cloud, not the device, it can be deployed without changing or adding a single device in the home; moreover, cloud-based processing enables rapid updating of applications, minimizing total cost of ownership or "application lifecycle cost."

CloudTV is available on nearly 10 million screens in the United States and abroad with Cablevision Systems, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and other operators, as well as on Philips-brand TVs and Blu-ray players.
