WINCHESTER, Va., Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Proving that the superior durability and beauty of its products is truly timeless, Trex Company - the world's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing - helped transform a nearly 300-year old colonial home for the popular PBS program This Old House®. Dubbed "The Bedford Project," the Nathaniel Page homestead in Bedford, Mass., was once occupied by a flag bearer for the Battle of Concord, a very early conflict of the Revolutionary War. Among the challenges facing current homeowners Joe and Rebecca Titlow was how to retain the beauty and charm of their circa-1720 home while updating it for 21st century living.

For the home's outdoor space, the Titlows themselves replaced the rotten boards on their wood deck with Trex Transcend decking in Spiced Rum, a warm, earthy umber with the natural, streaked look of hardwood that complements the home's rural setting. Trex Transcend Railing in Classic White created a perfect frame for the deck. Designed to outlast and outperform wood, composite and PVC for decades, Trex Transcend offers a superior combination of performance and aesthetics. It resists stains, scratches and mold and features a distinctive and natural-looking, high-definition wood grain pattern in rich, deep colors. Transcend decking also contains 95 percent recycled content, contributing to the LEED points of any residential or commercial structure.

"Trex Transcend allowed us to update our deck into a safer, more comfortable spot for our family, while retaining the historic beauty and charm of our home," homeowner Joe Titlow said. "It's durable and low-maintenance qualities have given us the ultimate peace of mind, and as a young father, I'm now looking forward to spending weekends enjoying - rather than maintaining - our outdoor living area."

Trex DeckLighting installed throughout the grounds adds both safety and ambiance to the setting, while stylish and durable Trex Outdoor Furniture completes the makeover and creates a comfortable spot for relaxation. The deck draws from all four distinctive furniture collections in order to create a one-of-a-kind multi-purpose outdoor setting, including a dining area with a bar table and side chairs from the Monterey collection, as well as versatile mini-lounge areas with Cape Cod Adirondack chairs and ottomans, Yacht Club chaise lounges and Rockport club chairs. The pieces coordinate with matching frames in Classic White and Sunbrella® fabric cushions in Canvas Navy for a crisp, classic New England look.

"This dramatic makeover project allowed us to showcase how the versatile design of our products can complement the ageless charm of a historic home, while providing the low-maintenance and eco-friendly qualities that today's homeowners desire," said Ron Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. "The unmatched durability of Trex's high-performance products also will ensure the outdoor living space of the Bedford House remains looking beautiful for years to come."
