Bringing It Together:  A Jazz Aficionado's Must Have!

Bringing It Together: A Jazz Aficionado's Must Have!

SAN ANTONIO, Jan. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- LiSem Enterprises, Inc. is proud to announce the re-release of a jazz great - Bringing it Together.

Stephane Grappelli and Toots Thielemans have been considered jazz giants for so long that the uniqueness of this classic encounter may be taken for granted. But imagine a jazz frontline of violin and harmonica! How often does that ever happen? Grappelli and Thielemans long ago transcended their instruments, taking their place next to the greatest soloists on any instrument. And yet, the fact that they overcame the stereotypes associated with violin and harmonica adds to their greatness and significance.

For their joint recording, Grappelli and Thielemans perform seven veteran standards and a pair of then current pop tunes. "Bye Bye Blackbird," which was written in the 1920s and revived in jazz by Miles Davis in 1956, features the violinist taking the melody, concise solos by Toots, Taylor and Grappelli, and the co-leaders trading off and sharing the closing melody. Being cooperative rather than competitive, this performance sets the mood for the rest of the set with the co-leaders showing mutual respect.

About the Players
When Stephane Grappelli first began to become prominent, the only significant jazz violinists were the remarkable Joe Venuti, the up-and-coming Stuff Smith and the more classical-oriented Eddie South. While Stephane Grappelli at least had Joe Venuti as a possible musical role model, Toots Thielemans had no real predecessors in jazz. Other than Larry Adler, a virtuoso harmonica player who performed some jazz but also classical music and pop starting in the 1930s, the harmonica had been relegated to blues and novelty music. Jean Baptiste "Toots" Thielemans had to carve out his own musical path. By the end of this CD, one comes to the conclusion that violin and harmonica make for a perfectly logical frontline in a jazz group, at least when they are played by giants on the level of Stephane Grappelli and Toots Thielemans.
