Explorer Richard Wiese Goes Digging with Celebrities for Dinosaurs in Alberta, Canada

Rare Dinosaur Species Uncovered in New ABC TV Stations' Series "Born to Explore"

NEW YORK, Oct. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- One of ABC Television stations' new Saturday morning program additions, "Born to Explore," heads to the largest horned dinosaur bone bed in North America in Alberta, Canada this November, just in time for industry sweeps period. Hosted by explorer and Emmy winner Richard Wiese, the show takes viewers back to the era that time forgot unveiling some of the most significant fossil beds in the continent and excavating a new species of dinosaur, the Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai.

Located near Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, Wiese joins actor Dan Aykroyd ("Ghostbusters") and other celebrity supporters including Donna Dixon ("Bosom Buddies") and Matthew Gray Gubler ("Criminal Minds") with environmentalist Robert Kennedy Jr. to embark on a celebrity dinosaur dig to generate funds for the creation of the Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum and attract attention to the rich fossil resources of Pipestone Creek.

Pipestone Creek lies in the Peace Country. A region long known locally for its fossils, it now has the attention of the world. Paleontologists regularly fly in from around the globe to excavate new sites. A brand new species of hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur) was announced in September and other discoveries are underway.

In addition to scouring through 75 million year old fossils, Wiese takes viewers on a journey through the breathtaking natural landscape of the Grande Prairie area, traversing the wilds on horseback and visiting with local First Nations peoples.

"The natural beauty of Alberta took our crew's breath away. Filming in the dinosaur bone bed was a rare opportunity and to discover a new dinosaur species was sensational. This region is a place I encourage people to explore when deciding where to take their next vacation, especially those looking for authentic experiences," says Wiese.

"This show has given me a chance to share my travel experiences with a national audience," explains Wiese. "I am particularly excited to showcase a different side of Alberta than many viewers might expect. This rarely seen side of rural Alberta will be an eye opener!"

Without leaving the comforts of their couches, viewers join Wiese as he heads North to witness the awe-inspiring, historic fossils embedded in Alberta, Canada. The Alberta, Canada episode of "Born to Explore" airs on ABC on Saturday morning, November 5th. Check local listings.
