BACKGROUND: In the mid-1970s, inspired by his work in the fields of broadcasting and journalism, Brian Lamb envisioned a public affairs network delivered nationally via satellite and cable. With the support of cable industry executives, Lamb established the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network as a not-for-profit company and built one of D.C.'s first satellite uplinks.
On March 19, 1979, C-SPAN broadcast the first televised session of the U.S. House of Representatives, ushering in a new era of journalism. Today, C-SPAN's network includes three 24-hour cable television networks, a radio station, C-SPAN.org and 15 other websites and a social media presence that includes Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. C-SPAN provides coverage of the day's most important news events online and to cable and satellite customers and radio listeners across the nation, helping ensure a more engaged and informed citizenry.
The Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media, named for the founder of the Freedom Forum and of USA TODAY, recognizes extraordinary achievement and leadership in the media. The University of South Dakota and the Freedom Forum created the award in 1989 after their joint establishment of the Neuharth journalism and scholarship program at USD. Al Neuharth is a 1950 graduate.
