Independent Film Gives Tarps to the Needy with Tarp Drives for Washington DC Homeless

Independent filmmaker Michael Stein and tarps supplier Tarps Plus donate one thousand tarps to the Washington DC homeless.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Tarps Plus and independent filmmaker Michael Stein are helping a small independent film get its message out and help the needy in a big way. They have set up tarp drives to bring awareness to the homeless and find investors for a film about someone who is homeless called "The Guitar Player." Stein will not be taking any fees for writing, directing or acting in the film and will be donating half of any profits he may get to homeless charities.

The tarp drives will be held across the nation, including Washington DC on Sept. 28th at the Community For Creative Non-Violence. One thousand poly tarps will be handed out to people living on the streets. The tarps are a simple yet effective way for people to prevent hypothermia by keeping dry and warmer.

As homelessness continues to be a major problem in the United States, many are looking for ways that they can effectively be helpful. Many people today need a place to sleep as well as food and clothing. The current shelters are nearly always full and there are many more people needing more assistance.

This production is intended to first produce something that is partially funded by the public for the public in conjunction with a film company willing to join forces with the filmmakers. Then Stein would take half of any profits that he would earn and use those to fund various programs designed to assist the homeless. Due to many budget cuts and cuts in governmental funding many of the existing programs are not able to provide as much assistance as is needed.

The more money the film receives in donations the bigger the film can grow. As the project grows the benefits to the homeless cause will also increase. Stein stated, "The tarps drives are a way to bring awareness as well as let people know we are serious about this cause."
