THURSDAY, JULY 28: HONORING A JAZZ GREAT

Profile America -- Thursday, July 28th. One of America's great jazz pioneers is being honored this week. The 40th annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival starts today and runs through the weekend in Davenport, Iowa -- where Bix was born. Some 10,000 fans will gather to honor the man whose innovative style on cornet, along with his compositions and piano recordings, influenced every jazz player who followed -- even though he was only 28 when he died. When Bix was actively playing and recording in the late '20s, Americans spent a little over $8 a person each year on radios, records, and musical instruments. Today, each of us spends about $25 annually on sound recordings alone. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
