Giving New Voice to Hispanic Culture: OCP Releases Flor y Canto, Tercera Edicion

Giving New Voice to Hispanic Culture: OCP Releases Flor y Canto, Tercera Edicion

PORTLAND, Ore., June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in nearly a decade, liturgical publisher OCP has announced a new edition of the best-selling Spanish-language Catholic hymnal series, Flor y Canto. This new resource gives diverse Hispanic communities music to unite in worship and celebrate their common faith while still honoring their unique cultures.

"Singing is one of the most important ways Latinos express their faith," says Pedro Rubalcava, Director of Hispanic Ministries at OCP. "When we selected content for this new edition, we took that into consideration. Comments and suggestions from the Spanish-speaking Catholic population shaped this hymnal. Flor y Canto is a formative and transformative hymnal for so many--both those worshipping in the church and the musicians serving those that celebrate in Spanish."

Among many new features, Flor y Canto, Tercera Edicion contains 200 new titles from the Caribbean, Central and South America, Spain and the U.S.--regions previously under-represented in other Spanish-language hymnals on the market. The expanded 740-song repertoire is a reflection of the growing number of cultures that make up the U.S. Hispanic Catholic population.

Mary Frances Reza, a prolific liturgical composer from Albuquerque, New Mexico says, "The sacred texts, set to music with a blend of many influences and styles representing the various Hispanic cultures, reflect the soul of a people connected to God and to one another. Flor y Canto hymnals have created a spirit of renewed hope and enthusiasm for those who are committed to Hispanic ministry: composers, musicians, catechists, choirs and music directors."

Other updates to Flor y Canto, Tercera Edicion include: an increased selection of songs for Sacraments, funerals, Quinceaneras, feasts and RCIA; 13 total Mass settings--including 6 that are new to the hymnal series; over 100 bilingual titles and a Psalter of common and seasonal psalms for the three-year liturgical cycle--with 17 new selections.

"I am very excited for the publication of Flor y Canto, Tercera Edicion. As someone who works in the music ministry of our parish, Flor y Canto has always been a valuable evangelistic tool," says Carlos de Alba, Music Director at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Chula Vista, California.

In addition to the Words and Music Assembly Edition, OCP has also developed an array of Flor y Canto accompaniment resources to support Hispanic parish musicians-including the new Words and Chords Guitar Accompaniment Book and the new Psalter Edition.
