Somalia / Radio Kulmiye resumes operations

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) welcomes the resumption of the Radio Kulmiye of its normal operations on Friday noon March 4, 2011.
The radio station has been off air for at least 48 hours following a letter ordering the radio to go temporarily off air from the National Security Agency. The radio immediately went off air upon receiving the letter.
The resumption of the radio back on air comes after the Minister of Information, Posts and Telecommunication, Dr. Abdulkadreem Jama authorized the radio back on air, according to the Kulmiye Radio Director, Osman Abdullahi Guure.
?We welcome the act by the Minister of Information to allow the radio to resume operations.? Mohammed Ibrahim, NUSOJ Acting Secretary General said. ?Freedom of expression and ideas is guaranteed by the Transitional Federal Charter of the Somali government as depicted in article 20 section 1 and 2, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(UDHR) and international treaties, as well as by those regional and global conventions of which Somalia is a member and we call for the Transitional Federal Government to ensure that these freedoms are practiced accordingly.?
