WXYZ-TV Gives Back to the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity
SOUTHFIELD Mich., Feb. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV Channel 7 announced a donation of $10,000 to benefit the Wayne State University: Journalism Institute for Media Diversity. The donation was made on behalf of WXYZ-TV and The Scripps Howard Foundation, and was presented to Professor Ben Burns, Director of WSU Journalism Program and Professor Alicia Nails, Director of the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity.
"We are thrilled to be able to make this donation," said Ed Fernandez, VP and General Manager of WXYZ-TV. "Wayne State University is clearly among the nation's top journalism schools. To be able to celebrate and support the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity is a privilege for us."
The donation will provide financial support through scholarship dollars and advocate for diversity in the media. "We have brought a wide diversity of folks into the profession of journalism," said Professor Burns. "We are changing the face of the industry and it's hugely important."
The $10,000 donation also supports the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity's 25th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, May 14 at WSU. Several Veteran journalists and media professionals who have been reporting on Detroit 25 years or more will be honored at the event. Journalists from Channel 7 include Diana Lewis, Mary Conway, Bill Proctor, Val Clark and Chuck Stokes.
