PER Foundation Fundraiser April 7, 2011 Features Movie 'Mahler Auf Dem Couch'

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The PER Foundation for psychiatric education and research will screen the German-language movie "Mahler Auf Dem Couch" on April 7, 2011 from 7 - 10 p.m. at the James Bridges Theater, UCLA. A reception will follow the film.

Maria Lymberis, M.D., President of PER, notes, "Proceeds of the fundraiser will be used to fund research to improve mental health outcomes for children and adolescents treated in the Los Angeles County public health system. We are proud to announce that research will be conducted under the direction of Professor Ken Wells, M.D., Director of the UCLA Semel Institute's Health Services and Society Center. The Center includes the NIMH Partnered Research Center (UCLA, RAND, and USC), the Research Center for Public Mental Health (DMH, UCLA, USC) and Media and Medicine for Communities."

Both the director of "Mahler Auf Dem Couch" and Dr. Ken Wells will be on hand at the fundraiser to answer questions about the movie and about the planned research project.

"Mahler on the Couch" is based on Gustav Mahler's life, and depicts his marriage, his despair and his consultations with Sigmund Freud. The film masterfully interweaves themes of death, reactions to loss, depression, sexuality, betrayal and feminine strivings for empowerment and personhood. A surprise hit at the Los Angeles Film Festival, the film was described by The Hollywood Reporter as "delightful, witty, artistically vigorous and occasionally loony fantasia about Vienna's cultural elite 100 years ago."

For more information about the fundraiser, see www.perfoundation.org. Tickets are $75 and available online. Students and psychiatry fellows may purchase tickets for $25.
