Mark S. Doss to perform as "A Night of Stars" guest artist as Opera Tampa honors Placido Domingo
TAMPA, FL, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ - Global opera star and Grammy Award winner
Mark S. Doss is set to perform as a guest artist at Opera Tampa's "A Night of Stars" on February 24, 2011 at 7:30 pm in Carol Morsani Hall at the Straz
Center.
The evening's host is Sherrill Milnes, world-renowned baritone and Opera
Tampa Artistic Advisor, who will also conduct one of the evening's
pieces. The special orchestra concert of captivating operatic arias
and ensembles features Maestro Anton Coppola, other special guest stars
of the opera world, the Opera Tampa Chorus, Opera Tampa Orchestra and
rising stars of the Opera Tampa New Artists program.
Placido Domingo is the evening's guest of honor. In addition to
conducting a piece with one of his protegees, Mr. Domingo will be
honored with a special presentation of the Anton Coppola Excellence in
the Arts Award at a post-performance gala.
Accompanied by the Opera Tampa Chorus, Mr. Doss will sing the Toreador
Song from Carmen as well as "Le veau d'or," which he performed as Mephistopheles in
Opera Tampa's Faust in April 2009. One of his signature roles, Mr. Doss began performing
as Mephistopheles more than 25 years ago and has since been cast in
this part by numerous leading opera companies around the world.
"I am honored to be performing on this very special evening as Opera
Tampa pays tribute to Placido Domingo," said Mark S. Doss. "I am also
quite excited to be preparing my selections with Sherrill Milnes, for
whom I first sang the Toreador Song from Carmen during a Master Class
when I was in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's training program."
Mark S. Doss' performance in "A Night of Stars" follows an impressive tour of Italian opera houses. In January and
early February, he performed as Klingsor in Teatro Regio Torino's Parsifal. Mr. Doss also recently took the stage in Italy as Jochanaan in Salome with Florence's Teatro del Maggio, Escamillo in Carmen at the famed Arena di Verona, Balstrode in Peter Grimes with Teatro Regio Torino, Jochanaan at Bologna's Teatro Comunale,
Escamillo at Teatro Municipale di Salerno, and Premysl in Sarka in his debut at Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
Upcoming engagements for Mr. Doss include Amonasro in Aida with the Vienna State Opera and San Diego Opera, Mephistopheles in Faust with the Santa Fe Opera, and Thoas in the Canadian Opera Company's Iphigenie en Tauride.
