Actor/Director LeVar Burton Comes to Metro Kansas City for Prestigious Event - A Benefit Dinner & Performance of Underground by the Storling Dance Theater

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Feb. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The renowned and celebrated actor and director, LeVar Burton, will visit Metro Kansas City in mid February. Mr. Burton, known for his roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Reading Rainbow, and Roots, will be the keynote speaker at a special dinner for The Culture House.

The event for The Culture House will take place at 6:30 p.m. on February 18, 2011 at The Carlsen Center - Yardley Hall, located on the campus of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.

This dinner and event are to commemorate a special performance by the Storling Dance Theater. The actual performance will follow the dinner on February 18th. Storling Dance Theater, along with its sister organization, The Culture House, will showcase a production called Underground. It is a story about slaves and their quest for freedom via the Underground Railroad. It is being performed in conjunction with Black History Month. This performance, now in its third season, has become widely successful and has been identified as one of the top 10 fine arts performances to come to Kansas City in the last decade.

LeVar Burton will share his life experience on the evening of February 18th. His highly celebrated role as Kunta Kinte in the world television mini-series Roots in 1977 was considered, by many, to be a sociological awakening and breakthrough in the hearts, minds and psyche of the American people. Based on the ancestry of author Alex Haley, Roots follows the story of Kunta Kinte who is abducted from his African village, sold into slavery, and taken to America. He makes several escape attempts until he is finally caught and maimed. Mr. Burton's performance in Roots parallels the theme of the Underground performance by the Storling Dance Theater and The Culture House.

Several Kansas City-area companies and individuals have contributed to the underwriting of the upcoming event on February 18th, including Capistrano Global Advisory Services (CGA). CGA is an Overland Park-based company that is dedicated to a variety of philanthropic and humanitarian causes around the globe. CGA is a firm that assists U.S. companies to export and expand into foreign markets, as well as to create joint ventures and strategic alliances. CGA's CEO, Antonio J. Soave, says, "It is wonderful to know that The Culture House and Storling Dance Theater are so actively involved in positively impacting the minds of young adults. The Culture House dedicates much of its time to spreading a message of hope, faith and self-esteem, and that is to be applauded in today's world."
