MONDAY, JANUARY 31: START OF "THE LONE RANGER"

Profile America -- Monday, January 31st. The most famous western hero of them all was heard on radio for the first time on this date in 1933 -- "The Lone Ranger." The show originated from the studios of WXYZ in Detroit. The Lone Ranger was played by several actors, but the most famous voice of the masked man was that of Brace Beemer. The famous opening to the program was by announcer Fred Foy, who invited listeners to "return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear." The Lone Ranger fought crime and injustice for more than 21 years on radio. When the show first started, just 15 percent of U.S. households had radios. Now, U.S. households have an average of 8 radios. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
