WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19: FIRST TV STATION IN THE WEST

Profile America -- Wednesday, January 19th. The first television experiments were conducted in the 1920s, and telecasts from the 1939 World's Fair in New York were among the first available to the general public. Television development was sidelined by World War II but picked up speed when it was over, especially in the New York City area. This week in 1947, the first television station west of the Mississippi River began operation -- KTLA Channel 5 in Hollywood. It's estimated that no more than 600 homes in the Los Angeles area had television receivers then. At the time, there was a total of only 66 commercial television stations across the nation -- now, there are 1,379. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
