TONIGHT: Renowned Filmmaker, Education Activist in Rochester to Talk Education Reform

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to shine a spotlight on the need for greater educational opportunities for children, the Gleason Family Foundation will host more than 100 people at an education reform event tonight (1/24/2011) in Rochester. The National School Choice Week event, which will feature a screening of the riveting 2009 documentary, The Cartel, will take place at 6:30 pm at The Little Theatre on East Avenue.

Following the screening, Cartel filmmaker Bob Bowdon will join with nationally-renowned education reformer Derrell Bradford for a discussion regarding education reform in New York and across the nation.

The film--which portrays a public education system that is beholden to special interests, ignores the needs of parents, and misallocates hundreds of millions of dollars intended to help children--has served as a rallying cry for advocates who want to give parents immediate educational options for their children. The trailer and reviews are available at: TheCartelMovie.com

"Education reform is the single most important issue of our time," said Jim Gleason. "The Gleason Family Foundation is honored to join with more than 150 organizations across the country in commemorating National School Choice Week, which will raise awareness about the need to provide enhanced educational options to all children."

Additional event information--including methods for obtaining tickets--is available online at www.schoolchoiceweek.com. The Gleason Family Foundation, which has supported education reform efforts in Rochester and across the country, is part of a broad coalition supporting and promoting National School Choice Week, which will feature events in nearly every US state. Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate in commemorations.

"This event in Rochester will continue an important debate on the need to provide parents with access to the best schools for their children," said Kyle Olson, executive director of National School Choice Week.

Media interviews are available before and after the event.
