TONIGHT: 'The Boys of Baraka' to Showcase Importance of Educational Options to D.C. Families (1/26/2011)

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the National School Choice Week celebration, Michelle Bernard, President and CEO of the Bernard Center for Women, Politics and Public Policy and Kent Amos, CEO and Founder of the Dorothy I Height Community Public Charter Schools, are hosting a viewing of the education documentary, "The Boys of Baraka," tonight, Wednesday, January 26th from 6-8pm. Following the viewing, Bernard will moderate a panel with some of the boys featured in the movie and take questions from community members in the audience.

Topics covered will include the importance school choice plays in closing the achievement gap, the need for effective and challenging schools, why meaningful education reform is possible now, and how parents can advocate for the best education for their children.

"The Boys of Baraka" is a 2006 documentary that features young 12 and 13 year-old boys growing up in the rough neighborhoods of Baltimore. The boys are given the opportunity to be taken out of that environment and sent to the Baraka School in Kenya, where strict discipline is enforced and each class has a one-to-five teacher-student ratio. The movie follows the boys' experience through their remarkable journey.

This event is presented by National School Choice Week, which is taking place from January 23-29, 2011 (www.schoolchoiceweek.com). 150+ organizations, leading policymakers and opinion leaders are joining together and planning major events across the country to highlight effective education options for every child.
