WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3: HISTORIC BROADCAST

Profile America -- Wednesday, November 3rd. We pretty much take radio for granted as it keeps us up to the minute on news, weather and traffic. Ninety years ago today, much of the talk was of the election the day before, when history was made as women were allowed to vote in the general elections for the first time. In another historic first that day, the event was covered by the first scheduled radio broadcast, as station KDKA in Pittsburgh carried the results of the election. Just three years later, that first station was joined by 550 others, as the popularity of radio swept the nation. Today, there are more than 11,000 AM and FM commercial stations, and Americans listen to an average of two hours of radio each day. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
