NEW YORK, November 9 /PRNewswire/ -- John Legend, six-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist, has teamed up with Western Union to launch its 50 Days of Giving campaign. The 50 Days of Giving campaign offers consumers the opportunity to decide where that support will go this holiday season. The five charities that have been selected to participate in this year's event are Boys & Girls Clubs of America, CARE, Mercy Corps, Save the Children and UNICEF.

John Legend is encouraging others to get into the spirit of giving by asking the public to determine which charity will get an additional $150,000 donation from Western Union. Consumers have the chance to vote on one of the five participating charities online until December 25th. In the end, Western Union will have granted $250,000 to benefit the five national charities while activating Americans to think not only about giving and receiving but also about giving back.

Charitable giving survey results:

* 50 percent of Americans believe that businesses, regardless of their financial health, are obligated to give to charity. This opinion is particularly true of the large companies (41%)

* Regardless of their financial situation, 36 percent of Americans believe it's their duty to donate to charity

* Two-thirds (66%) of Americans plan to give to charities this year, unfortunately, only 28 percent of them plan to prepare a budget

* Of those with a charity budget last year, 81 percent were able to keep it

* Nearly 4 in 5 (79%) Americans have been asked to donate money over the holidays. Friends (31%) and family members (27%) are the hardest to refuse.
