IPDC-funded training on online radio started yesterday in Rabat

RABAT, October 5, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ --

Twelve teachers and technicians from the Audiovisual Department of the Higher Institute of Information and Communication (ISIC) in Rabat started a one-week course on online radio. The training is funded by the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and is organized by ISIC and the UNESCO Rabat Office, in collaboration with journalists from Radio Canada.

The development of Internet news, including online TV and radio, has impacted the traditional ways of news consumption. With webcast and streaming media over the Internet, news has become available on demand at any time anywhere. Live online radio opens up a new channel of communication, where interactivity between the producers and the audience is a standard.

In this context journalism schools need to broaden their range of training topics to include online journalism and social media. This is the main subject of the training, which focuses on the theories and practices of online radio, and examines the paradigm shift between the traditional and online media.

As a result of the course, a radio programme on The Impacts of Online Radio in Society will be produced by the participants and webcast live on 7 October at 1 p.m. (Rabat time). The link to the online radio programme will be provided on the website of UNESCO's Rabat Office five minutes before the starting time. Interested audience is invited to interact with the speakers. On the last day of the training, participants will edit and post on the Internet the pre-recorded radio programme.
